ensuring the well-being of individuals. One vital component of emergency
preparedness is the presence of reliable and energy-efficient emergency
lighting products and systems. This article in tend to explore the significant
journey of emergency lighting, focusing on recessed emergency exit indicators,
wall-mounted emergency exit lights, emergency kits, emergency lamps, and backup
lighting.
Have you experienced being alone in the darkness? And do you know the phenomenal
psychological impact of it?
Psychological Impact of Darkness to human being:
When individuals find themselves in well-lit environments with good visibility,
they tend to feel secure and at ease. However, suddenly the darkness is around,
psychological impact of darkness towards our psychology is totally in difference.
In the absence of light and brightness, individuals not only seemingly experience
heightened anxiety, fear, but also a sense of vulnerability. And this can lead to panic and hinder their
ability to navigate safely. It is in such situations that emergency lighting
becomes crucial, providing a sense of clear direction and strong comfort
support. And at least, it brings back the environment which we are familiar with
and get used to.
There comes a question, do you know the origin and story behind the little green
man on emergency exits?
The little green man, Named ピクトMr. Picto, the little green man originated in Japan.
It is commonly found
on emergency exit signs, has an incredibly interesting background. This symbol
has its roots in the early 20th century when illuminated exit signs were not
yet introduced.
In 1978, the Japan Fire Safety Association held an "Emergency Escape Exit" signage design competition with the aim of learning from the lessons of two fire incidents in 1972 and 1973 (the Chiyori Department Store in Osaka, Japan and the Kumamoto Ocean Department Store in Japan), resulting in a total of 222 casualties. At the time of the incident, many people gathered at the exit, but were unable to open the door due to no clear signage telling them that this was a safe exit.
The designer of Little Green Man (Kotani Matsumoto) stood out from over 3300 participants in the competition. In 1987, Little Green Man represented Japan to participate in the ISO Safety Mark International Conference in Paris. Eventually it successfully defeated other designs and became an internationally recognized emergency exit signage.
It was Keiichi Naihai named the Little Green Man, Mr.Picto, taken from "PICTOGRAM", which means: picture & text.
As well, Keiichi Naihai established a special association for it: Japanese Society for Pictosan. Approved by the Japanese government, September 10th is Mr. Pitto's birthday every year.
After the improvement, it has been used to this day.
The green
color was chosen for its high visibility and association with safety. The
figure of a running man was added to indicate the direction of the exit. Over
time, this iconic symbol has become universally recognized as a means of
guiding people to safety during emergencies.
Origin of Emergency Lighting Devices:
The concept of emergency lighting devices traces back to the early days of
electricity. As progressive society appeared, the in demand of backup lighting for
the cases of power outages or emergencies became evident. This led to the
development of emergency lamps, which were initially powered by oil or gas.
With the advent of electricity, these lamps evolved into battery-operated
emergency lights, providing a reliable source of illumination during critical emergency
situations.
Market Trends, Demand, and Importance of Emergency Lighting Products:
In recent years, the demand for emergency lighting products has significantly
increased due to stricter safety regulations and a growing emphasis on
emergency preparedness. The market is witnessing a surge in innovative and
technologically advanced solutions, such as recessed emergency exit indicators
and wall-mounted emergency exit lights. These products are designed to be
highly visible, energy-efficient, and durable, ensuring optimal safety during
emergency situations.
The Importance of Emergency Lighting in Ensuring Safety:
Emergency lighting serves as a lifeline during critical situations, providing
individuals with the necessary visibility to evacuate safely. It plays an
important role in preventing panic, reducing injuries, and potentially saving
lives. Whether it is in commercial buildings, residential complexes, or public
spaces, the presence of reliable emergency lighting systems is essential to
ensure the well-being of occupants.
Examples of Emergency Devices Ensuring Our Safety in real life:
In today's developed world, emergency devices can be found everywhere, serving
as a testament to the importance placed on safety. For instance, for a wide
range like, airport terminals, even on the planes, there are strategically
placed emergency exit indicators and backup lighting systems to guide
passengers during evacuations. Similarly, to prevent power failures, hospitals
rely on emergency lamps to provide stable and uninterrupted lighting for surgeries,
operations or treatments. These examples highlight the critical role emergency
lighting at play in safeguarding lives.

not only provides individuals with a sense of security but also enables them to
navigate safely during critical situations. The evolution of emergency lighting
devices, such as recessed emergency exit indicators, wall-mounted emergency
exit lights, emergency kits, emergency lamps, and backup lighting, reflects the
growing importance placed on safety in modern society. By investing in reliable
and efficient emergency lighting systems, we can ensure the well-being of
individuals and minimize the potential risks associated with emergencies.
